The Shinetsu Trail
The Shinetsu Trail is a very special long-distance walk in the central alpine region of Japan - an 80km trek of the Sekida Mountain Range between Nagano and Niigata prefectures. It is a woodland trail of primeval beech, maple, birch, larch and cedar forests that is soft underfoot and gentle on your feet. It follows a ridge line at an elevation of approximately 1000m, and because there are no arduous mountain climbs, it is suitable for most walkers. It is divided into six sections - taking six days to complete the full trek, but we have also developed a half trek that takes in the first three sections plus a visit to a mountain shrine. All food is provided on the trail and you will stay in a delightful range of accommodation with onsen baths (hot spring) to soothe the joints and homey meals. The Shinetsu Trail is easily accessed from Tokyo, being about 1hr45min on the Shinkansen superexpress train to Iiyama. We hope you can join us on this beautiful and relatively easy-going trek.
